HOW TO DRAW HANDS

Posted by CattomNG - 1 day ago

hello newgrounds! for the tutorial jam ive decided to show you how to draw one of the harder parts of anatomy to draw. the hands! hands do so much for art, they show anger, power, softness, weakness, take a look at these hands from across gaming.

this hand belongs to street fighter character zangeif. its strong, big, and stocky. reflecting his character and spot in his game as a massive man whos very strong.

this here is master hand from smash. you can tell by its posing, pointed fingers, and looming angle that master hand is conniving, powerful, and a force to be reckoned with.

these are some examples on why getting hands right is important to your art. and while this tutorial may not be all encompassing i hope it can help as a start to more dynamic hand posing.

STEP 1.

we will start with a rounded box on a rectangle, these will be out wrist and palm. where everything will attach

STEP 2.

next we are going to draw the thumb. i prefer to draw the thumb all at once because of its length. i do still sperate the 2 parts of the thumb with having the upper bart be bigger than the bottom.

STEP 3.

next we draw the knuckles and bottom parts of the fingers. using circles for the knuckles is a good way to remember where the bending points of your hand are, they are not at the bottom of the fingers but the top of the palm. bennding them too high results in wonky hands. the rectanlges represent the bottom of the fingers, they dont bend, they are sturdy. its also easier to get the fingers hieghts right with rectangles first

STEP 4.

now we repeat step 3 at the top of the fingers. same principle only moved up

iu_1408445_9570862.png

STEP 5.

now erase all but your needed shapes. no more lines or circles for you!

iu_1408446_9570862.png

STEP 6.

your hand still looks a little wonky. its a bit blocky and undefined. why not add a line under the fingers and connect the hand to the wrist more securely and round out those minecraft fingers!

STEP 7.

your on your own from here you can color, shade, add details, remove details to your hearts desire! remember art isnt about rules or tutorials its about what you want to do with it! dont let me tell you what to do! i dont want you to see this as the golden rule only a push in the right direction, heres how to really draw hands, however you want! get creative and make some weird hands!!

CONCLUSION

this is the method ive used to draw hands for years. but ive also never stuck to a single method. look at these hands for example

all so diffrent but all recognizable AS hands. experiment, build off of., and have fun with my methods. shake them up and try something new but never stop trying! thats the one rule.

never stop trying.

All jokes aside, this is a good tutorial, and one that I will definitely be using in the future. A lot of hand tutorials I have looked at are overly complex for ametuer artists. This strikes the perfect balance between digestible and informative.
